News from the Office of Special Degree Programs

If you need advising:

For General Studies, International Studies or International Business click on our Department Calendar (top left link) and look for walk in times. Please allow an hour before the end of the scheduled times if you need to file a graduation plan or have a complicated issue. We do not want to have to turn you away if we run out of time. If you have completed 55 credit hours, you HAVE to file a graduation plan or your account will be put on hold and you will not be able to register. Think ahead and keep this in mind!! If you have not filed yet, see the guidelines for completing your graduation plan in General Studies and bring your completed graduation plan with you to your first meeting with an advisor.

For Interdisciplinary Studies advising you must call the Student Success Center at 884-9700 to make an appointment to see Deanna Cotter. Do not wait until the first week of classes or the week of Early Registration to meet with Deanna to do your graduation plan! Appointment times go quickly and you will run the risk of having a hold put on your account if you are unable to do a graduation plan last minute. Think ahead. Prepare. See the guidelines < http://specialdegrees.missouri.edu/forms/IntdscHowCompleteFileGradPlan.pdf > for completing your graduation plan in Interdisciplinary Studies.

If you are confused about the process to get a degree in any of our majors within Special Degree Programs, check out: Steps to Graduation. This is especially helpful to students that have less than 55 hours and haven't filed a graduation plan yet, but everyone will benefit from reading this document!

A basic overview of what you will find on our webpage includes:

  • CALENDAR (opens new window): You will find official dates from the Provost’s Office for various things you need to know about—pre-registration dates, semester breaks, the last day to drop a course, when classes begin, etc. Your advisor’s walk in times will also be on this calendar in addition to dates for job fairs, resume workshops, and guest speakers. The calendar will NOT be all inclusive of these dates but will include those we can get input.
  • DEPARTMENT NEWS: (This very page!) We will post information about events or meetings that we want you to know about, such as job fairs, resume workshops, internship opportunities, guest speakers, etc.
  • CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: We will share our major’s success stories with you – and we will have many of those. We will also list links that may help you find a career upon graduation, suggestions for how to sell yourself.
  • OTHER INFORMATION OF IMPORTANCE:

We include our Steps to Graduation (in pdf), and refer you here periodically, so you can remember the steps and procedures for graduating.

We also continue to have all of the different forms you may need for graduation plans, applying for internships, appeals, etc.

The International Business Guidelines (in pdf) for filing a grad plan can now be found on the International Business page and also under Forms.

So, welcome to our world! Special Degree Programs! International Studies, General Studies, and Interdisciplinary Studies. We are one of the fastest growing programs on campus and we are proud of our students and the advising service we are able to provide to you either in 210 Switzler Hall (General and International Studies students) or the Student Success Center (Interdisciplinary Studies students).

If you can’t find what you need here, ask us and we can help you, or we’ll add it to our web site.

Our suggestion: Study hard, go to class, remember why you’re here, and stay focused. Being in college is a wonderful experience and we expect each of you to take these opportunities seriously. Carpe Diem! Seize the day!
