Requirements

Students pursuing the Latin American Studies minor complete 15 credit hours from at least two departments. At least 6 credits must be numbered 2000 level or above; 9 of the required credits must be taken in MU coursework. The elementary levels of language (Spanish, Portuguese and/or equivalent) may NOT be used to fulfill minor requirements. Intermediate level language courses may be used to meet minor requirements.

In addition to the courses offered in the Spanish and Portuguese language departments, relevant courses for the Latin American Studies minor are offered by Anthropology, Geography, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, and Women’s and Gender Studies etc. Please refer to the Course Suggestions for International Studies, which includes relevant information for the Latin American Studies minor.

Please remember that courses in the major department used to fulfill major requirements may NOT also fulfill minor requirements, or vice versa. Courses outside the major department, but required for the major, may be used to fulfill minor requirements. In addition, courses required in the minor may be used to meet the College of Arts and Science Foundation requirements. The College of Arts and Science awards minors only to undergraduate students who are simultaneous recipients of a Bachelor degree. Students may not earn a major and a minor in the same field.

Advising

Students who want to pursue the minor should make an appointment with the International Studies academic advisor by calling (573)882-6060 (we regret that appointments cannot be made by email). The academic advisor will help students select appropriate courses to fulfill minor requirements and complete a minor form. After obtaining the academic advisor’s signature, the minor form should be submitted to the College of Arts and Science Advising Center in 107 Lowry Hall.
