Interdisciplinary Studies - Traditional ProgramIntroductionInterdisciplinary Studies Contact: The Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies allows students to select two or three disciplines within the major rather than focusing on a single subject. Students pursuing this degree program must complete the general education requirements necessary for all Bachelor of Arts degrees in the College of Arts and Science. The Interdisciplinary Studies advisor helps students tailor major requirements to suit their individualized career paths. In addition to completing general education and major requirements, at least 30 hours of course work must be 3000 level or higher (with ideally most of this built into the major.) Total hours for graduation must reach at least 120. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree works well for students who are pursuing fields that do not require specific undergraduate degrees but instead focus on transferable skills. The degree is well suited for pre-med and pre-law students, for example, because these kinds of professional programs welcome diverse undergraduate majors; the major allows students to complete the necessary or recommended prerequisite course work for gaining entrance into professional programs, but it also allows students to gain concentrated knowledge in other areas of interest. The major also attracts many students who have not been admissible to some of the competitive majors on campus such as communication, business and journalism. Students who wish to pursue work in these fields find that they still have many educational and professional opportunities available to give them the skills necessary to be successful professionals. While Interdisciplinary Studies is a highly flexible program, it is not a good fit for everyone. It is important for students who are coming from divisions outside of the College of Arts and Science to recognize that completion of intermediate proficiency of a single foreign language (usually two or three semesters) is required for Interdisciplinary Studies. Also, the Interdisciplinary Studies major requires at least 18 hours of Arts and Science course work. Since the program is a 39-hour major, this means that no more than 21 hours of non-Arts and Science course work can used in the major. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree is composed of four parts:
